1. I’ve never used Substance 3D Painter before. Can I still enter?
Absolutely! Check out the Substance 3D Painter Beginners Training on our YouTube channel by the great Pablo Munoz to get started.
2. Do I need to buy a Substance 3D Painter license to participate?
No, you don’t need to buy a license. If you’re eligible, you can download a free student license or use the 30-day free trial.
3. Do I have to texture Meet Mat in Substance 3D Painter?
Yes, Substance 3D Painter is a core requirement for the contest.
4. Where can I find the Meet Mat model?
The Meet Mat model is included as a sample in Substance 3D Painter. Access it by going to File > Open Sample > MeetMat.spp
5. Can I use other software to render versions of Meet Mat?
Yes, but you must include two required renders using the cameras from the ‘MeetMat’ sample project:
- C1_Front
- C7_3quarterRFup
7. How many updates do I have to do?
It’s up to you, but we recommend looking at past winning entries for inspiration. A good guideline is to share at least three updates to showcase your process.
8. Can my final render be an animation?
You may include supporting animations or turntables to showcase your final design, but rigging and animating MAT is not allowed.
9. Can I add new geometry to the scene?
No. You’re not allowed to add any new geometry to the base MAT character. This includes accessories, props, or internal objects.
10. Is fan art allowed?
Yes, fan art is welcome! However, entries must not incorporate or replicate intellectual property (IP) or brands.
For example, avoid using logos, characters, or trademarks from companies like Nike, Marvel, or similar. Violations will result in disqualification.
11. Can I pose the character or move it around?
No. MAT must remain in its default pose and position.
12. What’s the minimum age to enter?
Participants must be 18 years or older.
13. Can I import alphas, textures, or other assets into Substance 3D Painter?
Yes, but final textures created entirely in another tool are not allowed.
14. Can I share my work on social media?
Please do! Use the hashtag #meetmat4 so our team can find and share your work.
15. Can I change the scene background?
Yes, you can customise the background. However, this won’t affect the judges’ scoring. MAT is the hero asset.
16. Can I create alphas in ZBrush and use them as displacement maps in Substance 3D Painter?
Yes, that’s allowed.
